Candle Care & About the Scents

All the scents at SOMA Small Batch Goods are created to be enjoyable with a hot throw (the scent you experience while the candle is lit) that’s noticeable, but not overwhelming. This is intentional to not overpower your senses or your space, but to allow you to refresh your surroundings with scent for up to 4 hours at a time.

Please note that scent can vary for every person, and the same scent that can be too strong to one person, might be light-to-unnoticeable to another. Depending on the environment, size of the room, and personal preferences, every scent may vary.

We do our best to create scents we think you’ll reach for again and again. Every scent is tested and approved by the artist and maker. We only release scents that we love (and think you will too)! If you have any questions, please reach out to: info@somasmallbatchgoods.com.

All candle purchases come with candle care cards. Safety information and instructions are also located on the bottom of every candle. Your safety is our priority. Please stay safe and follow instructions! Keep reading for more candle care safety and tips below.

Safety Instructions and Warning. Please Read:

  1. Burn within sight. Never leave a lit candle unattended.
  2. Keep away from all children, babies, and pets. Do not place candle in areas where it can be knocked over by children, babies pets, or adults.
  3. Keep away from combustibles, fans, heaters, drafts, open windows, and plants (the heat can rise and cause heat damage to plants).
  4. Place all candles on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface. Avoid use within bookshelves or areas that do not have ventilation or clearance around the candle.
  5. Extinguish candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for any unwanted drafts and eliminate them before re-lighting.
  6. Make sure candle is completely out before leaving the room. Never use candle as a night light or before sleep.
  7. Never handle candle while it is lit, as there is hot wax inside the container. Allow the candle to fully cool before moving or handling.
  8. Never trim wick while candle is lit.
  9. Neither seller or maker is responsible for misuse.

More Candle Care Tips for Your Enjoyment:

TL;DR: Your candle should burn cleanly and evenly when wicks are trimmed regularly and care instructions are followed. After the 1st use, always trim your wicks (on every candle type and size, even tealight candles) before lighting and always allow your candle(s) to reach a full melt pool for the best experience! Patience is key. It can take up to 4 hours to achieve a full melt pool depending on the size of your candles and the environment the candle is in. (See image below for a visual on what a full melt pool should look like.)

Also, despite being smaller, our 3.5 oz tin candles can take longer to reach a full melt pool than the 7.1 oz glass jar candles due to their materials and size. We recommend lighting a candle when you know you’ll be available to enjoy its slow burn, keeping it lit and within sight for a max of 4 hours or when full melt pool is reached.

    1. Wicks are pre-trimmed for your 1st use so you can enjoy your candle(s) right away!
    2. After that, always trim your wick to be 1/4 inch in height (1/8 inch for wood wick candles) for an optimal burn before each use. Doing this will avoid an unhealthy flame and allow you to get the full life of your candles and reach the bottom.
    3. Use handy wick trimmers or a pair of scissors to trim your wicks regularly (we recommend trimming it right before each use.)
    4. Remove any loose trimmings from the candle surface along with any debris before lighting.
    5. Please allow up to 2 hours for the candle to “throw” its scent.
    6. Some scents are lighter than others and may not fill the entire room, as mentioned above.
    7. Heavy sooting is not normal and can be the result of not trimming the wick prior to burning. This can cause black soot or smoke to form along with a wavering flame. If your flame looks too large, put your candle out, wait a few minutes, and then carefully trim wick before re-lighting.
    8. If a full melt pool is not achieved and the candle is put out too soon, tunneling will occur and will continue to occur through out the life of the candle.
    9. Do not trim your wicks shorter than 1/4 inch, as the flame will become weak and a full melt pool will be difficult to achieve.
    10. To avoid heat damage, stop the use of your candle when 1/2 inch of wax remains. You can re-purpose or recycle your vessels.
    11. Always stay safe, follow candle care and safety instructions provided.
